St. Mary’s has been announced as a 2016 Capita and C2K ICT Excellence Award winner.  Having been shortlisted in the category for ‘Transforming Teaching and Learning through Technology’, the school was named as the overall category winner at an awards ceremony in The Merchant Hotel, Belfast on 8 December 2016 which was attended by Miss Hagan, Director of e-Learning,  and Mrs Gillespie, Principal.

Established in 2015, the ICT Excellence Awards celebrate the innovative and collaborative use of technology in schools across Northern Ireland and the positive impact on students and their wider communities.  The ‘Transforming Teaching and Learning through Technology’ category recognises schools which have used technology to transform their educational experience and improve the engagement and motivation of staff and students.  The judges were impressed by St. Mary’s use of technology to enable students to direct their own learning, embed technology into the lesson plan process and support innovative approaches such as the ‘flipped classroom’.  The judging panel also highlighted the fact that St. Mary’s approach successfully prepared students for the next step of university or employment.  Mrs Gillespie commented: “This award is a real testament to the hard work of the team at St. Mary’s.  We have always intended to use technology to enable independent, personalised and self-initiated learning – and it’s made a tremendous difference to the experience and education we are able to offer our pupils.  This has been a huge effort from the entire school and we are proud to have that work recognised by Capita and C2K.”  As part of the award, St. Mary’s will receive a prize fund of £3000 to spend on ICT equipment from Capita.
