St. Mary's students enjoyed great success at the Salters' Festival of Chemistry held at Queen's School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Our Year 8 team (Annie Demelas 8E, Dara McPeake 8A, Megan Dunlop 8E and Dylan Ormsby 8A) took part in two lab based challenges  - The Salters Challenge and the University Challenge competing against school teams from all over Northern Ireland and a few from the south.

“It was really enjoyable day and I think the pupils got a lot out of it. I am very proud of them!” Ms P McGale

Both challenges involved the pupils using their science knowledge and practical skills to solve a problem. They got to experience working in an undergrad chemistry lab. The challenges were difficult - but our pupils worked extremely well as a team, applied their skills and knowledge well and won First prize in the Salters Challenge.

The  prize is some very useful molecular model kits that we can use with our classes in the chemistry dept. The pupils also got a small kit to keep themselves and a really nice certificate along with pens and Frisbees.
