MAGHERAFELT CUP

Posted on 05th October 2015

Tuesday 29 September saw the inaugural Magherafelt Cup take place in St Mary’s Magherafelt between St Mary’s & St Pius X College. The idea of the cup was to further strengthen the bonds between the two schools. So many pupils in each school have family and friends in the other and given our proximity, it seemed only natural to unite over a shared love: sport!

The concept of the day was games. Gaelic, camogie and soccer took place on the pitches but really they were a side show. The day was about friendship and forging of links. Mr Frank Dunlop presented the trophy to the winning captains from St Mary’s this time but the real winners were the Year 8 pupils (almost 100 of them) that took part on the day, renewing acquaintances & sharing tales of how their lives have changed since September. Special thanks must go to the 2 Principals, Mrs Gillespie and Mrs Bartley, and the PE teachers.

This puts St Mary’s at the top of the league table in the open class. There are still three more shows in this league; the next one on the 10 of October

Students studying AS Biology were accompanied by five Biology teachers on a field trip to the North Antrim Coast and Portglenone Forest on 22 September 2015. Pupils had the opportunity to carry out line transects to sample the distribution and abundance of seaweeds along a rocky shore at Cushendall and to collect data on limpets to facilitate the completion of AS Biology coursework.
