FINDING FAITH IN FATIMA

Eight St. Mary’s pupils travelled with twenty-two other young people to Our Lady’s Shrine in Fátima in Summer 2018 with the Armagh Diocese. The students had a jam-packed week beginning with a tour of the Sanctuary in Fatima, the specific place where the Virgin Mary appeared to the three young shepherds in 1917.

ACTION MS FUNDRAISING WALK

Action MS Chief Executive, Mrs Ann Walker, visited St. Mary’s Grammar School this week for a special Awards Presentation to thank Year 10 pupils for their tremendous efforts on behalf of people with multiple sclerosis.

Organised by Mr Brady (Head of Year 10), pupils took part in a Walk for MS in June at Meadowbank Sports Arena and raised a total of £2,346.98 in aid of Action MS, Northern Ireland’s Multiple Sclerosis Charity.

A Level students in St. Mary’s Grammar School had cause for celebration following the publication of this year’s examination results. Ms Gillespie, Principal, reported that an outstanding 95% of all examinations taken by students resulted in A*-C grades.  81% of all entries resulted in A*-B grades while 44% of all entries resulted in A*-A grades.

Following the passing of Mrs Hynds, Assistant Principal, a Book of Condolence will be open in the Main Reception area of St. Mary’s from Tuesday 17 April 2018 – Friday 27 April 2018 between 10am and 3pm each week day.

Blanche Cases, Year 9, has been awarded a ‘Highly Commended’ Certificate which means she has been placed in the top 18 in each category for her artistic entry.  The judges of the competition commented on the exceptional standard of this year’s entries in each age category and we are so proud of Blanche for rising to the top as one of the best entries.  For this we would warmly congratulate her on this truly superb achievement. Making its third appearance in a MacRory Cup final on St. Patrick’s Day, the school made history when it collected the trophy for the first time following a 0-19 to 0-13 victory over St. Colman’s College, Newry.

The Irish department is delighted to have recently received a BASLA award (British Academy School’s Language Award) to fund a yearlong project. 150 schools entered the competition and we were the lucky winners in the NI region. CASH FOR CLOBBER

In order to raise money for Cancer Focus, some members of staff are taking part in a six week Fit 4 School Challenge that involves a healthier diet and more exercise. These staff members are organising a number of activities inside and outside of school in order to fundraise and Cash for Clobber is one of these initiatives. We are hoping to raise £5000 and all help and support would be greatly appreciated in order to reach this total.

2020 VISION OF COLIN BATEMAN

A group of twenty-nine Year 8 pupils attended an inspirational talk given by one of Northern Ireland’s best known authors, Colin Bateman. The event was hosted by St. Pius X College on 27 April. The writer spoke about the importance of books and reading; he also spoke candidly and humorously about his own writing career. After the talk the pupils involved were given the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of Mr Bateman’s best-selling children’s book, “Titanic 2020”.

It was a most enjoyable and worthwhile experience. One pupil, Helen Doherty, commented, “I felt that his talk was very inspirational. He mentioned how he became an author and then we got a chance to purchase a signed copy of a book of his called, “Titanic 2020”. I particularly liked when he talked about meeting Liam Neeson in a penthouse in New York! I thoroughly enjoyed the trip!”

Our boys recently played local rivals St Pius X College at Rossa Park. St. Mary’s were the eventual winners on a score line of 2:13 v 2:11. The St Mary’s scorers were: Declan Cassidy 1.4, Tiarnach Donaghy 1.0, Kevin Small 0.5, Matthew Loughran 0.1, Kealan McCann 0.1, Odhran Devlin 0.1 and James Crawford 0.1. The boys now progress to the semi final where they will play St Mary’s CBGS, Belfast.

SIANSA: ALL IRELAND WINNERS

Congratulations to our senior traditional players who competed in the All Ireland Final of the Siansa competition.  Head of Music, Miss U Donnelly said: “There were 8 groups in the final, which was held in the National Concert Hall and our group came 3rd, winning 750 euros.  Their performance was exceptional and was broadcast live on Radio na Gaeltachta.  It will also be broadcast on TG4 on 23rd April.”
