On 9 October 2019, A Level Drama students attended a performance of Blackout at Sperrin Integrated College, Magherafelt.
Blackout tells the story of James, a young man from a dysfunctional family. The death of his grandfather results in his dabbling in drugs and alcohol – a path which leads him to court and a possible custodial sentence. Directed by Philip Crawford, with an atmospheric soundtrack by Chris Warner and physical theatre sequences by David Calvert, this high-energy production was followed by a Q&A with a panel of young people with first-hand experience of custody and the judicial system. The performance was presented in conjunction with the Department of Justice NI and Hydebank Wood College. St. Mary’s pupils were impressed with the style of the performance and also the subject matter of the play.
