St. Mary’s hosted its annual Primary School Gaelic Football Tournament on Wednesday 27 February 2019 in Meadowbank Sports Arena

It was a wonderful, sunny winters day and that reflected on the standard of football from all the 12 competing primary schools. Each school played 3 group games to determine if they would make it into Division 1 or Division 2 for the knockout stages. There was some excellent football played throughout the day and the semi-finals of Division 1 saw Holy Family, Magherafelt take on Anahorish, whilst the other semi-final pitted Gaelscoil an tSeanchai against St. Patrick’s, Loup. After two incredibly tight and absorbing games, Holy Family progressed to set up a final against St. Patrick’s, Loup, a repeat of last year’s final.

It was nip and tuck the whole way through, with each side enjoying their fair share of domination but it was Holy Family who turned the tables on last year’s result by claiming a 3.4 to 1.2 victory and the Division 1 Title. There was some consolation, however, for St. Patrick’s, Loup, as their number 4, Cody Rocks, picked up the Player of the Tournament Award after some outstanding displays.  In the Division 2 final, it was New Row, Castledawson who lined up against St. Oliver Plunkett’s, Toome. It was another exciting game with New Row taking victory and lifting the Division 2 Shield.

The event was organised by Mr Convery and the Year 14 BTEC Sport Students. A lot of time and planning went into the smooth running of the event and they can be exceptionally pleased with how the event ran.
