St. Mary’s Grammar School, Magherafelt has held its annual Awards Ceremony. Celebrating the successes and achievements of the academic year 2015-16, the event took place in the school on Wednesday 28 September 2016.
As well as celebrating the outstanding attainment of pupils in recent GCSE and A Level examinations, the evening also provided an opportunity to recognise the accomplishments of pupils in a range of extra-curricular activities, ranging from sport to public speaking.
The Guest Speaker for the evening was Father John McKeever who is a past pupil of the school. During his address, Father McKeever congratulated pupils on their academic success but advised them to be wary of the pressure facing young people today to strive for perfection in everything. He urged students to always remember that they are “only human” and explained that he hoped that they would encounter failure in the future because so much can also be learned from this experience.
During the Principal’s Address, Mrs Gillespie provided a comprehensive report on the academic year 2015-16, including an update on the progress being made on the £4.5 million building project currently taking place on the school site. She said: “Having previously secured a capital investment of more than £4.5 million through the Department of Education’s School Enhancement Programme in 2015, we were thrilled when work commenced last year on the construction of our new school extension. I am delighted to announce that the first phase of this development is now complete and our new state-of-the-art Music and Creative Arts suite is due to be officially handed over to us in the coming days. The second phase, which will see a modern and spacious Sixth Form Centre added to our facilities, is due for completion in early 2017.
As the 90th anniversary of the school approaches next year, we are mindful of the history and tradition of this school and the strong foundation established by those who have gone before us. It is upon this history, tradition and foundation that we continue to build for the future.”
