Café Bordeaux

St. Mary’s recognises the important role of schools in contributing to childhood nutrition and the development of the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthier food choices. We understand that nutrition is central to health and that children’s diet can be an important influence on their health now and in the future.

With this in mind, the catering service in St. Mary’s promotes healthy eating and encourages pupils and staff to make healthy food choices by providing healthy and nutritious meals and snacks each day.

Café Bordeaux is the name of the school’s main dining area.  It is a bright and spacious area, providing pupils with a pleasant dining experience in a relaxing, comfortable and sociable setting.  Following an inspection in September 2013 as part of the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, Café  Bordeaux was awarded five stars - the highest award on the rating scale. 

Café Bordeaux opens three times each day, offering a breakfast, break and lunch service. Throughout each day, pupils have the opportunity to purchase drinks, snacks and meals.

Between 8.30-8.55am, pupils have access to cereal, toast, pancakes, juice, milk, bottled water, tea and coffee. 

Between 11.00-11.20am, pupils may choose scones, muffins, toast, grilled bacon, fresh sandwiches, fresh fruit, fruit juice, smoothies, milk, water, tea and coffee.

Between 1.00-1.45pm, pupils may select a meal from a varied menu which caters for particular dietary requirements, including those of vegetarians and vegans.  A Meal of the Day option and other Meal Deals are available daily.  All meal options comply with the Nutritional Standards for School Lunches.

Multiple serving points, pay points and a cashless operating system ensure that service is swift, queuing time is minimised and pupils have sufficient time to eat lunch.   

Café Pierre provides another catering facility within the school.  It opens at lunchtime each day serving sandwiches, wraps, paninis and toasties.  Additionally, the school has installed vending machines which dispense sandwiches, wraps and bottled water.

The service provided by Café Bordeaux and Café Pierre ensures that pupils who are involved in extra-curricular activities at lunchtime or after school have the option, at various times throughout the day, to purchase food and drinks in advance.

In the interests of Health and Safety, pupils must only consume food and hot drinks in designated dining areas.
